Question by Salade Girl: How do my meals from yesterday look? Too much food?
Breakfast – A vegan breakfast sandwich. Non gmo- NaSoya Plus Tofu cooked in a mixture of a wee bit of canola oil, bragg’s liquid aminos and apple cinder vinegar. On healthy (no HFC, no chemicals, no preservatives, etc.) whole wheat toast with sliced avocado and tomato, sprinkled with celtic sea salt and black pepper. Also a little bit of organic horseradish mustard for some kick. 2 cups of green tea.

Lunch – trader joe’s vegan Masala burger (basically the filling of a samosa turned into a patty) on the same bread I had at breakfast with mango chutney sauce (from whole foods but not the whole foods brand) and romaine. I also had a silk live! yogurt, plain/unsweetened but I mixed in some sugar free (no splenda though) boysenberry jam for some sweetness. I also had 2 very small homemade (vegan) oatmeal cookies, we used 1/3 of the (florida crystals) sugar called for because there are raisins in it and they are sweet enough!

Snack – 1 small whole wheat bagel (very small) with homemade peanut butter & one synergy kombucha.

Dinner – big glass of almond milk, homemade veggie loaf with walnuts, chickpeas and brown rice in homemade tomato sauce. mmmm!!

dessert – an ENTIRE GRAPEFRUIT!!! yummy!

How does it look? I feel like I had a lot of carbs
Oops! I did have a big crunchy salad with boston lettuce and those little purple baby greens (dunno what they’re called) with balsamic vinegar and carrots with dinner. Forgot to mention that…

Best answer:

Tea and Ready-to-Drink (RTD) Tea in the U.S.: Retail, Foodservice and Consumer Trends-Aarkstore Enterprise

Although the economic recession has clearly affected the U.S. tea market, slowing previously double-digit sales growth in the pricier RTD segment while slightly lifting sales in the more affordable bags/loose tea segment, tea’s appeal as an “affordable luxury” and its compelling image as a healthy product have kept sales in the black when many other CPG categories have seen declines. Moreover, considering the 2005-2009 period overall, sales have done well, and as the economic picture brightens the recession may turn out to have a silver lining in that it has compelled tea marketers to innovate along value-added lines likely to continue to resonate well with consumers in the years ahead.

Market thrusts examined in the report include exotic superfruit flavors; hybrid products designed to compete with other beverage categories including bottled waters, energy drinks and sodas; new RTD spins on green tea that promise to mainstream this tea type once and for all; emerging segments including yerba mate and Kombucha; the upswing in fair trade and other “ethical” appeals; social marketing via nontraditional media like Facebook and Twitter; and a strong tea push in the convenience store channel by marketers and operators alike. At the same time, foodservice players from fine restaurants on down are expanding their tea offerings even as tea rooms and coffee/tea shops surge, suggesting tea may be headed toward much broader levels of distribution and popularity à la Starbucks.

This fully updated report examines the U.S. market for tea across the retail and foodservice spectrum, including ready-to-drink (RTD) tea, leaf (bagged and loose) tea, and instant tea. Following an introductory chapter documenting tea types, packaging trends, “the ethics of tea,” and global market trends, the report segments and quantifies the market by channel and product type, providing historical sales figures and projections through 2014. The report examines market drivers and trends and thoroughly maps out the competitive situation to the marketer and brand share level, profiling brands including Arizona RTD Tea (Ferolito, Vultaggio & Sons), Bigelow Tea (R.C. Bigelow, Inc.), Celestial Seasonings (The Hain Celestial Group, Inc.), Honest Tea (Honest Tea, Inc.), Lipton (Unilever) and Starbucks and Tazo Tea (Starbucks Coffee Co.). Trends in new product introductions are analyzed at length, based on data from Datamonitor’s Product Launch Analytics, as are trends in the c-store and foodservice channels.

An exclusive feature of this report is custom survey data from Packaged Facts’ February 2009 online poll of 2,600 U.S. adults, which was conducted to measure purchasing patterns, attitudes and demographics specific to tea and other functional foods and beverages. Drilling down to the brand level, the analysis also relies on consumer survey data from Experian Simmons’ Spring 2009 National Consumer Study to chart consumer demographic and psychographic trends, Information Resources, Inc. InfoScan Review data tracking product sales in mass-market channels, and wholesale data from leading natural/specialty channel distributor United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) to quantify sales and market shares of natural and specialty products.

Question by Molly: Favorite Kombucha Brewing Recipes?
I’ve been brewing kombucha for about two years, and have yet to really nail down the best recipe. I made one batch a few months ago that was incredible, but I haven’t been able to replicate it (I should probably start by writing down what goes in each time). I usually use a combination of half green/half black tea, but I’m looking for a tried-and-true awesome recipe to help me out of my brewing rut. My favorite commercial brand of kombucha is GT’s Raw Organic Kombucha, and I would love to be able to replicate that flavor. Thanks!

Best answer:

Answer by Morgan
I use the recipe that you can find here:

www.happyherbalist.com/index.asp?ID=5&PageAction=Custom – 22k

I like it because it doesn’t produce such a sweet kombucha as some recipes do.

I also like GT’s Kombucha. Inspired by their flavors, I boil ginger in the water before adding tea bags. Then after fermentation I add a small amount of blueberry concentrate for Blueberry Ginger Kombucha. You could also try adding Goji Berry juice to your Kombucha!

Question by JoanieLSpeak: Does anyone know of any interesting or exotic tea-related gift ideas?
Every year I make a gift box for my husband with a different take on tea. The first year I bought him everything for Yerba Mate: the gourd, bombilla, mate, gourd scraper, etc. The second year I bought him items to make Matcha Green Tea: matcha, ceramic bowl, tea ceremony tools, matcha whisk, etc. This year I am at a loss for ideas as to a theme.

I have been thinking of getting him a kombucha starter kit to make his own, but neither of us are big fans of kombucha. Anyone know of any other cool exotic tea rituals that I could make an awesome gift out of?
I bought him a nice tea box our first Christmas; it was what i put all the mate tools in. We also had bubble tea at our wedding so we still have all the stuff from that. Good answers though! You’re on the right track!
Oh yea, and I buy him blooming teas for Valentine’s day (something we can brew and share together). We also have a million glass teapots from the wedding (blooming teas were our centerpieces). This is why I am at a loss for ideas!

Best answer:

Answer by Gary D
A very nice mahogany tea chest is always a nice idea. Here’s an example of one I bought from this company a few years ago. It’s a dignified gift, quite sturdy and comes with imported Israeli Wissotsky Tea included…

http://www.israeliproducts.com/page/IP/PROD/TEA/TEACHEST/SESSION_ID/f76b52207b848076cbd0cf3900cadc32

World Market also offers nice glass teapots in which you can use blooming flower tea from China. You probably know about it, but it’s a mix of various tea leaves with flowers which are all bound up in a ball. As it steeps in the pot, it opens up to reveal a beautiful decorative bloom inside the glass pot. Each flowering tea can be reused about 4 times. They say 6 times, but realistically 4 is about the maximum before you start getting barely flavored water. Enjoy! d=)

Red Tea: A Cup Full of Health Benefits

While teas have been enjoyed for their flavorful varieties, such drinks cultivated from natural spices, herbs, flower petals and fruit oils possess natural health properties. But though the specific health benefits of green tea have been widely publicized and made aware through publication of studies or specific product launches, puerh tea, known simply as red tea, contains equally beneficial health properties.

The unique taste of puerh tea is attributed to its fermentation process and its quality leaves. Grown in the Chinese region named Monastery of Kombucha, the leaves from this red tea are harvested in a pollution-free environment and infused in natural caves for a pure quality that is both rich in color and earthy in taste.

Puerh tea, as with any tea variety, can be bought at a local herbal health shop, or through herbal health stores online like Bio3 Natural Health Products, whose mission is to incorporate healthy products into a healthy lifestyle. A box of 25 puerh tea bags is about five dollars, and the studies alone show that one cup of puerh tea a day could improve your health.

Reports have shown that red tea’s natural quality provides a natural dose of powerful antioxidants. Results from a 2004 joint study led by the Department of Food Science and Technology at Chia Nan University of Science showed that antioxidant activity was significant in water droplets infused with puerh tea extracts, and only slightly higher than droplets infused with green tea.

Antioxidants have been known to prevent cellular damage caused by free radicals. According to the National Cancer Institute of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, tests in laboratories and research among animals have shown that free radical damage associated with cancer is prevented through antioxidant activity. Though such studies on human beings are inconsistent, antioxidants may neutralize free radicals that would otherwise cause damage to DNA and other molecules.

Another study published in 1997 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry showed that such teas, including puerh tea, contain small molecules called flavonoids that have an anti-allergic property. According to Donald R. Buhler and Dr. Crisotbal Miranda of Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology at Oregon State University, more than 4,000 flavonoids have been identified, many of which are found in fruits, vegetables, and beverages like tea, coffee, beer and wine.

Other puerh tea health benefits include its ability to reduce the absorption of fats and facilitate digestive processes. A comparative study published by the American Chemical Society in 1995 showed that body weight was suppressed in rat species that were fed puerh tea leaves. The following results were confirmed in the study’s abstract: “Pu-erh tea and oolong tea could lower the levels of triglyceride more significantly than that of green tea and black tea, but pu-erh tea and green tea were more efficient than oolong tea and black tea in lowering the level of total cholesterol.”

www.shed30in30.info The Kombucha or Manchurian “mushroom” is widely used to boost the immune system. The name is kinda misleading because it is not a mushroom at all. It is a flat like, pancake shaped combination of health-promoting lichen, richly beneficial bacteria and yeast that has been used in Asia as a natural energy booster for a very long time. Like yogurt, kombucha is probiotic, having live beneficial bacteria and can be made at home. However, unlike yogurt, kombucha is made with black or green tea. sugar, and water. Kombucha is a live fermented tea with beneficial yeasts and bacteria. It can take 8-15 days to ferment kombucha at home, although it can be purchased in stores with live probiotic bacteria. As the tea has grown in popularity a few commercial growers and makers of Kombucha have entered the market, although most regular drinkers grow and brew their own batches. The preferred material for making and storing Kombucha tea is glass, as stainless steel, ceramics, and plastics may leak toxic by-products into the liquid during the long “fermenting” process, such as lead.

Question by Brett D: Kombucha brewing question?
I will begin brewing my own kombucha in a few days, I did a few years ago. I am familiar with the process, but I was just wondering if anyone has used different teas to flavor the drink. I used to use green tea exclusively, what I am thinking now is to use 2/3 green tea and 1/3 gren tea flavored, like berry. Or maybe 1/2 and 1/2. Let me know your experiences or other ways to flavor the tea. I just don’t want to use fresh fruit, I like to store the tea and don’t want the fruit to go bad.

Thanks for the help folks…10pts

Kombucha Tea – The Immune Booster to Fight Swine Flu and Influenza

The Kombucha or Manchurian “mushroom” is widely used to boost the immune system. The name is kinda misleading because it is not a mushroom at all. It is a flat like, pancake shaped combination of health-promoting lichen, richly beneficial bacteria and yeast that has been used in Asia as a natural energy booster for a very long time.

Kombucha is not eaten, but is brewed into a strong antiviral and antibacterial tea after it has been left to ferment for a week or more in a mixture of spring or filtered water, organic sugar, and organic green or black tea.Kombucha Tea is widely used to help fight immune related disease and greatly helps to boost the immune system to fight swine flu, fight influenza and other viruses with out any ill effects.

Not all Kombucha is created equal. Look for Organic Raw or Organic Unpasteurized Kombucha Tea which is in the refrigeration section the store. I make tea at home both plain and flavored which is very inexpensive. I also buy the GTS Synergy brand Kombucha Tea which is high quality, Raw, and come in flavors as well.

Dosage Well I drink Kombucha daily for about a year now and I tend to drink about a wine glass size 3 times a day before or at meals. If you have never had this tea, It is best to start out with about 2oz day for a week then increase to 2oz a day 3 times a day for about another week or so. After that drink it as much as you like but its best to divided up you Kombucha consumption throughout the day.

It is not recommended to give children under 13 years old Kombucha Tea. Not enough study has been done to determine whether or not this tea is safe for pregnant or nursing mothers.

There are some many health benefits to drinking Kombucha tea. Not to mention it is a very tasty and refreshing drink. Go to fight swine flu and influenza naturally, now to find out more ways on treating and preventing influenza. and swine flu.

Best answer:

Answer by ಞmaggieಜೆ
None, excess B12 is excreted in your urine. It’s a good idea to space out vitamin intake through-out the day because only a certain amount can be metabolized at any one given time. This way you maximize absorption.
