Green Tea and Egcg

Green Tea has been a part of Chinese medicine for more than 4,000 years. But today, new scientific research in both Asia and in the Western world is providing promising evidence that the properties of Green Tea may have the potential to nutritionally support healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Laboratory studies are providing links that theorize that Green Tea may assist the body’s immune system in combating cardiovascular disease, arthritis, aging, cognitive impairment, infections, tooth disease, stress…as well as numerous other health issues.

There is even evidence emerging that drinking green tea has effects on body weight. A well-researched article published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that men who were given a combination of caffeine and green tea extract burned more calories than those given only caffeine or a placebo.

The reason for the abundant nutritional benefits being attributed to green tea lies in the fact it is rich in catechin polyphenols, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). EGCG is a powerful anti-oxidant and may be nutritionally beneficial in the war on weight. Although most tests have been performed on laboratory animals, at least one with humans showed that taking in the equivalent of 3 cups of green tea per day burned an additional 80 calories per day. Although 80 calories may not appear to be significant, over the course of a year that adds up 29,200 calories. That means you could lose more than 8 pounds without making any other changes.

The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition documents a study that concluded Green Tea drinkers burn as much as 4% more energy than people who did not consume green tea. Green Tea appears to transform the body into an energy burning machine. How does green tea do this? Researchers have come up with several possible reasons which may explain this phenomenon:

1) Green Tea nutritionally revs up the fat-burning effects of brown fat, a special kind of fat that creates heat by burning calories at a very high rate.

2) Green Tea nutritionally supports the body in sending glucose to muscles, where it’s used for energy, rather than to fat tissue, where it’s stored.

3) Green Tea inhibits the action of fat-digesting enzymes, making the fat from food less available to the body.

4) Green Tea assists the body in lowering the production of fatty acids, blood fat and cholesterol.

What sets green tea apart from other teas is the way it is processed. Green tea leaves are steamed, which prevents the EGCG compound from being oxidized. By contrast, black and oolong tea leaves are made from fermented leaves, which results in the EGCG being converted into other compounds that are not nearly as effective in supporting health benefits and weight-loss.

Safe Thermogenic Weight Loss

So, although clinical trials conducted by the University of Geneva and the University of Birmingham leads us to believe that green tea has a thermogenic effect and raises the body’s metabolic rate, the rate at which calories are burned, more research is needed before researchers can say with absolute certainty that green tea helps you lose weight. However, the findings certainly look very promising and the results of their study pose substantial implications for use in weight control.

While Green Tea is known to be safe, an exercise regime and safely cutting down on your calorie intake especially, sugars and starch, is the best known weight loss strategy. In addition, it is always advisable to seek your doctor’s counsel before introducing any nutritional supplement or beginning any exercise weight-loss program.

Denise Brienne asked:

The health benefits of green tea dieting can be great. The Chinese have known about these benefits for thousands of years. They use it to treat everything from headaches to depressions. In order to get the most from green tea and the health benefits that it offers you should read the information below and incorporate into your diet.

First you should know that by just drinking green tea you can help fight or cure cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol levels, cardiovascular disease, infection and impaired immune systems. These benefits alone are worth drinking few cups of tea a week.

Green tea is special because it contains EGCG or epigallacatechin gallate. EGCG is a very powerful anti-oxidant. In fact it is so powerful that it can kill cancer cells without even harming the body. Green tea can also help to improve HDL (the good cholesterol) and LDL (the bad cholesterol.)

Lately green tea has been helping people with weight loss. When taken on a daily basis it has been determined by research to help you burn more calories as well. So if you are looking to lose a couple extra pounds you should try to mix some green tea into your diet every day.

This tea is unique from other teas and offers better benefits because of the way it is processed. You see green tea leaves are steamed which holds in the EGCE compound. Other teas are made by fermenting the leaves and during this process any help benefits are oxidized.

Julian Tai asked:

For over 4000 years, green tea health benefits have been studied and promoted by Chinese physicians and herbalists. In this modern era, we in the west are beginning to recognize that daily green tea consumption can improve our health and help us to resist disease. Many hospital and research institutes are conducting studies to determine just what the health benefits really are.

Fountain of Youth

How can green tea improve your mind, body and spirit?

First, it is full of antioxidants called catechins. Because green tea is less processed than either black or oolong teas, the concentration of catechins is higher. These powerful antioxidants are responsible for cleaning up free radicals, tiny unstable molecules that damage healthy cells.

Free radicals have been linked to cancer, among other diseases. Research shows that a diet high in antioxidants can inhibit the growth of free radicals, lowering our risk of cancer. Free radicals also contribute to the signs of aging. Daily doses of the antioxidants found in green tea can help keep you feeling and looking younger!

A study conducted at the University of Rochester’s Environmental Health Science Center looked at the effect of the chemicals found in green tea on a particular type of molecule. It is called the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, and can activate harmful genes. Their findings indicate that EGCG, one of the antioxidant compounds found in green tea, may inhibit the activity of AH molecules.

Brain Food

A study published in the Journal of Neuroscience found that the antioxidant epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, might help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s. When large amounts of EGCG were injected into laboratory mice, they responded by generating less of the protein that is associated with Alzheimer’s.

Endless Health Miracles

Green tea health benefits include lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Both human and animal studies have linked the consumption of green tea with lower total cholesterol, and higher HDL or “good” cholesterol.

A study conducted in Taiwan determined a link between green tea and reduced blood pressure. Hypertension affects a large percentage of the world’s population, and can possibly be controlled by drinking even small amounts of green tea on a daily basis.

Green tea health benefits are endless. Cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes are just a few of the diseases that seem to be helped or defended against by this mild beverage. New studies are constantly reinforcing what the Chinese have known for centuries: drink your tea every day and live a longer, healthier life!

Trey Winston asked:

Have you tried a cup of green tea yet? If you have, you are one of a growing number of people who are catching on to a growing trend. These days, the green tea wave is one of the strongest tendencies among the growing number of people who want to live healthily.

Green tea is increasingly lauded for its claimed health benefits, ranging from promoting mental clarity to preventing several types of cancer, or even prolonging life. That’s why a lot of health-conscious individuals have made green tea a part of their daily diet, some having made a complete switch from coffee to the green brew.

Behind the health claims lie the green beverage’s high content of antioxidants, substances that protect the cells of the body and strengthen the immune system. While several foods can claim to contain antioxidants, the tea plant has its own brand, called epogallocatechin gallate, or EGCG.

In laboratory tests, EGCG displays extremely strong antioxidant qualities, and is several hundred times stronger than more famous substances such as vitamin E and vitamin C. Green tea contains more EGCG than black teas, as up to thirty percent of the dry weight of the tea is pure antioxidant healthiness.

But the next health wave is already gathering momentum, and this time it’s white. White tea is measured to have an antioxidant content up to three times greater that green tea. In addition, white tea lacks the vegetal, «grassy» taste that characterizes green tea.

There are two main reasons why white tea has such a high concentration of antioxidants. First, it is only minimally processed after the harvest. Green tea, by contrast, is slightly oxidized («fermented») and then pan-fried or steamed to halt the oxidation process. White tea is not oxidized at all, which means that the antioxidants are intact when the tea ships.

Second, because white tea is harvested only during a few days very early in the spring, the leaves are very young. In fact, they are still buds, which means that the antioxidants that have been generated in the leaves throughout the winter are at their highest concentration.

Unlike animals, plants don’t have an active immune system, and must depend on various chemicals to fight decay of their cells. The antioxidants are vital in that regard, and in white tea, they are concentrated more than in any other natural product.

When brewed, white tea takes on a pale, golden hue. The aroma is mild and fresh, and the flavor is subtle, fresh, and almost flowery. Many who have tried green tea are surprised to find that this even healthier tea does not have the same leafy flavor.

White tea comes in several varieties, but the most exclusive ones consist entirely of very young, tightly rolled buds covered in the fine, white down that gives the tea its name.

White tea is usually sold only in loose leaves, and is more expensive than green tea. This is due to the rarity of the tea – only a tiny amount of this luxurious product is manufactured each year. But unlike most other luxuries, white tea is expressly good for you. So good, in fact, that you’d be hard pressed to find a healthier beverage anywhere.

Angelina Summers asked:

I’m sure you’ve heard about the health benefits of green tea and how it can have a big effect on various illnesses if drunk on a daily basis. However when tea comes into the equation, we always have to look at what effect the caffeine content is going to have. So is green tea decaffeinated and why does it matter?

The answer to the first part of this question is a big resounding no, as all teas naturally contain caffeine to some extent. And I will address the second part further on in this article.

It’s important for you know that unless it specifically says decaffeinated on the label, the green tea you buy will contain caffeine. And in fact, the longer you steep your cup of tea, the greater the caffeine content will become. Afterwards you are likely to have a pretty restless night, feeling pretty edgy but that will ease off as the caffeine goes out of your system. Depending on your sensitivity to caffeine, you can have a whole range of symptoms. So it does matter if you drink green tea that is decaffeinated in that you will have none of these side effects.

And did you know that small amounts of naturally occurring caffeine are not in the least harmful for you? It’s only when you regularly drink your tea or coffee in larger amounts or take isolated caffeine in power drinks or tablet form that it becomes an issue and potentially dangerous for you.

So how is green tea decaffeinated anyway? Well, there are a few methods for doing this and they all have a different effect on the health benefits of the tea. The first is a very natural method involving spring water and effervescence. This is a very effective way of doing it as it preserves 95% of the EGCG which is the powerful antioxidant which gives green tea its great reputation. Another method uses ethyl acetate and this only retains around 30% of the EGCG which means that the tea has a much lower antioxidizing effect. One amazing fact about EGCG is that it is 200% times more powerful than vitamin E in fighting free radicals in your body. That’s reason enough to want to have some of this incredible antioxidant every day, isn’t it?

If you are asking is green tea decaffeinated, then I am sure you are one of those people like me who lays great importance on living in a healthy way. And yes, it does matter what you eat and drink if you want to be strong and healthy and feel energized. Green tea is an important addition to your daily health regime as it can help to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, enhance your immune system, speed up your metabolism and so burn away unwanted fat, to name just a few benefits.

However, you may well be someone who just isn’t willing to take on the risks of large doses of caffeine every day and would like a healthy alternative.

I think it might interest you to know that there is a very healthy alternative available in the form of green tea extract which has all the benefits of green tea but is in a much easier form to ingest and can be blended with many other herbal extracts to bring you a powerful tonic to combat and readjust all those imbalances that can occur due to your diet and lifestyle. This form is decaffeinated.

And I am sure you would be very interested to learn that when green tea extract is combined with certain other extracts, its healing properties can be greatly enhanced. The synergy of ginger and turmeric, for example is such that green tea’s antioxidizing effect is increased and its absorption greatly improved. When it is combined with other antioxidants, the total effect is greatly increased as each ingredient interacts with the others.

Imagine how powerful that would be to have a daily supplement that could offer a large blend of 76 different herbal extracts, minerals, vitamins and more, one of which is green tea extract in a decaffeinated form, acting together in a synergistic way to maintain optimum health for all times and challenges.

My research has led me to a product that meets this description. Go now to my website to read all about this hugely effective nutritional supplement that can make a big change to your life. This is one I can fully recommend. See if you agree with me.

Aoife Joyce asked:

If you are suffering from any minor irritations or illnesses or you just want to stay in the best health you can, I have some exciting information about Green Tea that will help you on your path to good health. Most people that know of Green Tea would know the basics – it is very good for you. But how many know why it is said to be so good for you. For those of you that are among the many that don’t know any details, I will be giving you some particularly interesting details that may shed some light on its said goodness.

To begin with, Green Tea was found by the Chinese over 4,000 long years ago. It is made from the steamed dried leaves of the shrub plant Camellia Sinensis. Drying the leaves this way allows the delicate antioxidants to remain in their natural and best state. And while talking of antioxidants, the most beneficial and prominent of these is EGCG or in scientific terms Epigallocatechin Gallate. This antioxidant is 100 times more powerful than Vitamin C and is 25 times more effective than Vitamin E. This is lovely news for your skin!

Fats and sugars that we ingest are synthesized by the body into a matter called Triglyceride. Triglyceride is used up by the body as a source of energy. If too much sugars and fats are taken in to the body however, there develops an excess of triglyceride. This excess is part to do with what causes obesity. This is not to say that EGCG can remove problems with weight on its own. However it can help hugely with efforts in reducing weight and weight loss diets. It can work in this way as EGCG actually stimulates the enzyme that dissolves triglyceride.

Those electrons that can cause huge destruction in the body are known as Free Radicals. These electrons are unpaired. Because they are deficient of a partner, they are in a ‘reactive’ state. This means they move around the body searching for a healthy electron to pair up with. Some of them are formed naturally in our bodies, but not to an alarming degree. Most of the free radicals in the body are there by way of external factors like UV radiation and toxins in the atmosphere. As they are unhealthy electrons, by attaching themselves to healthy pair, they can damage that healthy pair. They can cause destruction of the cells membranes, allowing bacteria’s and diseases to enter and form within them.

While this persists, one cell after another, it gives way to larger bodily structures becoming unhealthy. Some results of this could be cardiovascular diseases, lowered immunity, cancer development and possible DNA damage. Prevention of this kind of damage can be helped with increasing intake of EGCG in your diet. EGCG can actually KILL free radicals. Therefore, the more EGCG you take in the higher take in the higher our immunity will be in guarding against illnesses and diseases of this kind.

On this note, Green Tea is not the only food that contains EGCG. It can be sourced in many other foods in high doses also. Some of those foods are carrots, broccoli, strawberries, spinach, grapes and red wine. In saying that, Green Tea does contain the highest percentage of EGCG antioxidants than all previous mentioned foods. Green Tea also holds Vitamin B2, Riboflavin, which is involved in the formation of red blood cells, production of antibodies and cell respiration and growth. This next to EGCG and all the other antioxidants it holds, can help in avoidance of several diseases, some I spoke of above, others include strokes, blood clots, skin cancer and many minor complaints and ailments – age spots, mouth ulcers, gum disease, heartburn, lack luster hair, weak nails, even your memory and vigor.
