Daniel Lanicek asked:

Green tea has been enjoyed by the Chinese and Japanese cultures for thousands of years, yet it has not been until relatively recently that the rest of the world has discovered the joys of green tea. It is considered to be one of the most popular herbal supplements in the world. Green tea offers many nutritional benefits; such as its ability to help loss weight, lower cholesterol, increase immune function, and improve the cardiovascular system. The reason for green tea being so incredibly beneficial lies in the fact that the green tea leaf is rich in healthy antioxidants called catechin polyphenols.

The most powerful of these catechins is EGCG and it accounts for 10% to 50% of the total catechin content of green tea. The EGCG in green tea is beneficial for the heart and circulatory health and support of the body’s natural resistance to cancer of the bladder, , colon, esophagus, lung, pancreas, prostate, skin and stomach. It is anywhere from 25 to 100 times more potent than vitamins C and E.

Tea made from tea leaves (as opposed to herbal teas) are very good for you, since they are simply water plus phytochemicals (of which catechin polyphenols are a part of) and caffeine, and very little else, unless of course you add sugar or another substance to it before drinking. Green tea contains about half of the amount of caffeine found in black tea and about a quarter of the amount of caffeine that is found in one regular cup of coffee making it a healthy drink you can consume at just about any time of the day.

Both green and black tea are derived from the same plant, yet black tea is fermented and therefore contains more caffeine, and green tea leaves are not fermented. Green tea leaves are also rich in fluorine and help to prevent dental decay by inhibiting the enzyme that causes plaque formation. Another important factor is that people generally consider green tea to cause less nervousness and anxiety than that of black tea, probably due to the lower levels of caffeine.

Overall, it is not hard to see why green tea is so respected; its plentiful beneficial nutrients and other properties are nothing but positive, and can be beneficial to one’s health in more than several ways. This article is just the tip of the iceberg of the many great qualities of green tea. You owe it to yourself to learn more about this tasty and healthy drink.

Willie Jones asked:

More and more people are becoming aware of the mass assault on our food supply due to chemicals, pesticides and genetically modified foods all in the name of profit. While stock holders are happy, what about the millions of people who are nutritionally deficient and suffering with ailments and disease needlessly!

The key to good health relies on the correct ratio of acid/alkaline balance in the body. How one achieves this is by eating 75% alkaline forming foods and 25% acid forming foods, preferably organic.

Acid Forming Foods

-	All processed foods! This includes pastas, cakes, cookies, salad dressings etc.

-	Meats, including Beef, pork, bird, fish, shellfish, eggs

-	All dairy products, including butter, milk, cream, ice cream, cheese

-	Nuts

-	Sodas

-	Caffeine, coffee, tea

-	All breads

-	Alcohol

-	All foods with sugar

-	Vegetables such as asparagus, sauerkraut, chickpeas, brussels sprouts

-	Vinegar

-	Lentils

-	Plums, prunes, cranberries

Alkaline Forming Foods

-	Salad greens

-	Fresh fruit

-	Dried fruit such as raisins, dates, figs, apricots

-	All sprouts

-	All vegetables (except the ones listed above) Especially good are onions and garlic

-	Citrus fruits ( even though they are acidic, they have an alkalizing affect on the body)

-	Good fats such as olive and flaxseed oil

-	Honey, maple syrup and molasses

-	Herbal teas

-	Fresh fruit and vegetable juices

-	Yogurt and sour cream

-	Almonds, brazil nuts

If you look closely at the lists above you can get a pretty good idea of what you currently may be eating more of, whether acid or alkaline type foods. To get a more accurate measure you can buy ph strips from any drug store and see exactly where you are at and what you need to do create the optimum ph balance in your body.

In optimum health the body will naturally filter, cleanse, detox and extract nutrients efficiently.

If you find you are over acidic or alkaline you can take steps to repair the situation by switching over to the foods you should be eating on a regular basis.

Water is also extremely important in not only the cleanse cycle, but in normal daily function. You would be surprised at how many people are generally dehydrated and suffering needlessly with pain and fatigue, and it is a very easy fix. Drink up! Lots of water! You’ll feel much better. (This is a major undiagnosed problem for seniors)

For better health! Enjoy the journey!

I drink about five 20 oz glasses of various herbal teas through out the day. I also drink water throughout the day. When I get hungry and absolutely must eat something I go for a fruit or veggie. However I try and go the entire day without food. I am planning on doing this detox for only one month. What are the side effects that can happen from this?
Also I am not drinking my tea with sugar or any sugar substitute.
Also I’m not doing this to lose weight. And I really appreciate all your responses. Thanks

David T Smith asked:

The best detox and cleansing teas are without a doubt herbal teas or tisane teas. The health benefits of such teas are known widely and it is easy to purchase them almost anywhere. There is a very diverse range and they suit almost any taste, from sweet to bitter. All of them are naturally sweet and lots are caffeine free. They suit all special diets apart from nut allergy sufferers, in some forms of herbal tea.

Some of the best detox and cleansing teas are thought by many to be green tea, which is from China and is taken by anyone who suffers from constipation, rectal build up, cold and flu symptoms and other similar ailments. It is a light and refreshing tasting tea and is usually associated, in its native land of China, with longevity.

One of the health benefits associated with drinking herbal tea in conjunction with a balanced diet are a positive impact on the immune system. This means that the immune system will develop new immunities to intestinal diseases by stimulating the growth of new intestinal micro flora to take the place of old flora that may have become damaged or killed over time.

This is particularly the case with some of the best detox and cleansing teas such as rooibos and green tea. Another is the normalising of blood pressure. Herbal teas are good for those with high or low blood pressure and often help sufferers to recover from any illness caused by the abnormal blood pressure levels. Tea has been linked with the prevention of heart disease because it reduces the blood glucose activity, also helping stop the development of type two diabetes later in life.

Some of the teas have been proven, not only to cleanse the intestinal tract but also to slow down or even stop intestinal pathogenic activity, thus preventing any build up in the colon to harbour any diseases. Teas, even the best detox and cleansing tea are rarely referred to as being a miracle cure for any disease, although it is thought to have anti – carcinogenic properties and slow down the growth of already well established cancer cells, whether benign or malignant.

All in all, there is not much medical evidence to verify the specific healing properties of the best detox and cleansing teas but the results are out there, and with a few more years of research I’m sure the medical profession will be jumping at the idea of using these teas as slow acting solutions to lots of life’s problems.

Patrick Day asked:

Herbal teas have been in use for centuries. They have been consumed for their medical properties but also as nutritional supplements and simply for their taste and comfort.

Most of the teas you will find at your supermarket or health food store will have some information regarding what benefit the teas’ ingredients are thought to deliver to the body. Of course, many of these claims are part of the historical record, not necessarily endorsed by the FDA (no company is going to spend its money researching and proving or disproving the health claims of a product they don’t have a monopoly on). That being said, take any exaggerated claims with a grain of salt.

When you are undergoing a detoxification program, your body is ridding itself of built up toxins you’ve accumulated through diet or your environment. While releasing these toxins from where they are stored in the body, you may experience some discomfort as they are working their way through your system. Chamomile tea is an excellent choice for relaxation. It has a mild sedative effect and eases digestion. It is a wonderful choice at night before retiring.

Chamomile is one of the prime ingredients in the popular ’sleepy time’ tea from Celestial Seasonings. It is an excellent choice at night as well.

Green tea contains powerful antioxidants, hundreds of times more powerful than such workhorse antioxidants as vitamins E and C. This kind of antioxidant power is great for a detox program. Any errant oxidants let loose from their resting places can be snapped up by the forces inside green tea. Drink as much of this tea during your detox as you wish. The only caveat is that is does contain caffeine. It’s best to stop drinking green tea in the afternoon as to not interfere with a good night’s sleep.

Teas containing milk thistle and/or dandelion are very beneficial for the health of your liver. This is vitally important as the liver is the prime detoxifying organ in the body. During a detox program it will be operating at a peak rate and any tonic it receives will help it operate more efficiently.

Your next largest detoxifying organs are the kidneys. Nettle tea comes to the rescue here. Nettles have a diuretic property which helps the kidneys rid the body of toxins quickly.

One main reason herbal teas are used during a detox program is to improve the speed at which your detoxifying system operates. This is important because these organs, the liver and the kidneys (and to a lesser extent, the lungs and the skin) are dealing with an increased level of toxicity. Granted, those toxins have been in your body for a while but they have not been processed properly and removed. The faster the toxic material exits the body, especially during this period of heightened activity, the better it is for your health all around.
